Ephesians 5:17 CEV Don’t be stupid. Instead, find out what the Lord wants you to do.
Knowing God’s General Will! : By James L. Lantz
God has a wonderful plan and path for each of us! Our assignments were determined prior to our being formed in our mother’s womb, as revealed from both Jeremiah and John the Baptist. Jeremiah 1:5 NLT “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” The angel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias, saying, your prayer is heard and Elizebeth shall bear you a son, whom you are to call John. Gabriel gave additional details concerning John’s assignment being it was quite unique. Do not think that you are of less importance to God than John the Baptist for the very least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Remember, some parts of the body of Christ that seem the weakest and least important are actually most necessary. God predestinated us to be adopted into His family by Jesus Christ according to the good pleasure of His will from before the foundation of the world! Our heavenly Father has a good, acceptable, and perfect will planed for each of us that can not be improved upon! That being said, the majority of people refuse God’s amazing plan for their life. Often careers are chosen and opportunities accepted according to how much it pays, or what they like to do, or perhaps what their parents do. We who choose to follow the Lord are not to conform to this world but rather be transformed by renewing our minds to God’s word which is His will. God’s heart for His people to walk in the blessing is relayed in the following verse. Jer. 29:11 AMPC For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.
We find God’s general will for each of us written in the Holy Scriptures. These doctrines and commandments bring us instruction for righteousness and how to relate to God and man.
The First thing to know is God wills for every person to Repent And Receive Salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. God’s unwillingness for even one person to perish moved Him to send Jesus to give His life for ours! Salvation is accomplished when a person hears the gospel, receives the truth, and declares Jesus is his Lord. The receiving of the truth is the repenting part. The unrepentant person sees what God wants but decides to do things their own way.
The Second step in God’s general will for all believers is generally Baptism In Water. There are occasions where people are so hungry for God, like Cornelius’s household, that Jesus baptised them with the Holy Spirit immediately upon their hearing the word. Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
The Third step in God’s general will for all of His children is to receive the Baptism Of The Holy Spirit. Having the Holy Spirit, the Helper, our Advocate live inside each of us is more advantageous than what the original twelve disciples experienced in living and working with Jesus. John 16:7 WNT Yet it is the truth that I am telling you–it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. Just as He promised, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit at the right time and on the appointed day. Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Jesus was emphatic about His disciples being filled with power before going out to minister! Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The Fourth thing I included in this list of God’s general will for all christians is to Prosper And Be In Health! The beloved apostle John reveals our heavenly Father’s great desire for each of His children to prosper and be in health! 3 John 2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. Jesus being the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of the Father went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil. Jesus became poor so that we might become rich and He took our sicknesses upon Himself so we could be healed! 2 Cor. 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. It is never God’s will for His children to suffer lack or to be sick! Isaiah 1:19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: Our job is to believe!
Number Five on this list is to Share Salvation With Others. We are joined to the Lord by saying yes to Jesus. All who are reconciled to the heavenly Father through Jesus Christ have also inherited the ministry of reconciliation. We are now Christ’s ambassadors, speaking on His behalf, telling others how God placed their sins on Jesus so they can have right standing with the Father. 2 Cor. 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
The Sixth thing on this list is to Walk In Love! Our spirit was recreated in the image of God immediately upon our confession of faith, but our souls (mind, will, and emotions) have to be trained to conform to the word of God. Our thinking needs to change from the ways of this world and conform to the ways of the kingdom of light. Renew your mind to walk in love like God loves and your flesh will no longer be able to dominate you. 1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. Col. 3:14 CEV Love is more important than anything else. It is what ties everything completely together.
Number Seven on our list is to Be Led By The Spirit Of God! The Holy Spirit has been sent to live inside each believer and He will lead us into all truth. Rom. 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Our willingness and determination in following the Holy Spirit’s leading will dictate our success or failure. The number one way He leads is by the inward witness, just a sense of yes this is right or no, don’t do that. Perhaps you have said, I knew I should have done that, or I knew I shouldn’t have done that. Let’s look for the Holy Spirit’s leading in even the minor details of our life. Col. 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Number Eight on our list for God’s general will is Grow Up! We love babies! Babies are a gift of a precious new life, but we don’t want our little baby to stay a baby. We want them to grow up and join us in the work of God. The laws of nature show us God’s design of starting from a seed and growing up to be like the parent. Peter exhorts us to desire the sincere milk of the word that we may grow spiritually. God wants us to mature so we can receive our inheritance and not be tossed around by every wind of doctrine that deceitful men use to deceive little ones. Eph. 4:15 CEV Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head
Number Nine on our list is to Be Thankful! Paul instructs us in his letter to the church at Philippi to not be anxious about anything but rather to pray and make supplications about everything. We are to make our requests to God with thanksgiving! Giving thanks to God in every situation is His will for us! 1 Thess. 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
The Tenth thing on our list for every christian to do is to Rejoice Continually! Everything God requires is a tall order and impossible without Him, but thank God we are not without Him. This word of the Lord in Philippians four says we are to rejoice in the Lord always and again I say to rejoice. Phil. 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. The next several verses clue us in on the how to stay in rejoicing mode. The word moderation in the next verse could be better translated as reasonableness or gentleness. Refuse to be anxious by taking on any care but pray about everything. Then God’s peace which passes all understanding will keep your heart and mind through Christ Jesus. Continue to think about things that are true, honest, right, pure, lovely, reports that are good, that which is virtuous, and that which is to be praised! God’s great love in removing us from the kingdom of darkness and rescuing us from an eternity in hell would have been a tremendous reason to rejoice but there’s so much more. God is extravagant and gave us a new life as joint heirs with Christ, filled us with His Spirit, saying rule and reign with Me! Rom. 5:17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. No one who sees themselves as inferior, deficient, and destined to lose will be rejoicing, but those who see themselves in Christ realize He already won the victory for us. Rejoicing is an area that we need to step up in! The curse will come on us if we refuse to serve the Lord our God with joyfulness, and gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things! (Deut. 28:47&48) 1 Peter 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. These three witnesses, Moses, Peter, and Paul, are all saying that it is God’s will to rejoice in His exceeding goodness!
