1 Chronicles 16:8 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.
Dividing Spirit And Soul! : By James L Lantz
Many of us who grew up in church are familiar with the phrase, a soul was saved, in relation to a commitment being made to follow Christ. We understood that they had received eternal life and are now saved! As our understanding of the scriptures grew, we found that it is the spirit of man which is born from above the moment we received eternal life. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. We are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in our physical body. The spirit of man is the real you and the part which became a new creature in Christ Jesus upon your confession of faith. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. This new man has the resurrected life of God in him and is completely equipped with all the fruit of the Spirit. Col. 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Our spirit is fully furnished with the love of God, His joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control awaiting development and release into this world. Peter calls the born again spirit the hidden man of the heart. 1 Pet. 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. The way we know we are saved is by God affirming to our spirit that we are His! Romans 8:16 ASV The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God:
The soul of man consist of our mind, will, and emotions and must be retrained upon entering the kingdom of God. When we were in the kingdom of darkness we followed along after the things of this world which are governed by the god of this world. Now that we are in Christ we are commanded to come out from among the evil doers and be separate. This does not mean that we cannot work with and live neighbors to unbelievers, but rather to conform to God’s plan and His methods. In the devil’s kingdom we had no covenant with God and no hope of eternal life. Eph. 2:12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: When we entered into covenant with God through accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior we became heirs of God’s Kingdom. Now that we are in the Royal family we need major mind renewal according to who we are In Christ, what we have in Christ, and what we can do in Christ. Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. s we yield to the leading of God’s Spirit and feed upon His word we become transformed to think and act like Jesus. James, the half brother of Jesus, in writing to believers, tells

us that our souls will be saved through the engrafted word of God. James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. The salvation of our soul is a process which can be speeded up or slowed down depending on how quickly we yield to the Spirit or if we stubbornly drag our feet. As we become doers of God’s word His blessing comes on us and we grow in the Lord. We are a triune being made in the likeness of God. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the most part our secular institutions major on the mental (mind) and the physical (body) leaving many ignorant of the spirit and the ways of God. Even in the church, many of us have been guilty of placing a greater emphasis on the mental and the physical for our prosperity and health while neglecting the spiritual. God said, attend to My words for they are life to those who find them and healing to all your flesh. Jesus said, it is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh profits nothing, My words that I speak unto you are spirit and they are life. Mark 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Jesus and the apostles majored on the majors and minored on the miners.
The spirit and the soul are both eternal and so tightly woven together that it takes the sharpness of the word of God to divide them. Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The greek word translated spirit in Hebrews 4:12, 1 Thessalonians 5:23, and Acts 7:59 referencing the human spirit is also used in referencing the Holy Spirit and evil spirits. In John 3:6 this same greek word, pneuma, is used twice, referencing both the Holy Spirit and the human spirit. No need to be a greek scholar as Jesus brilliantly reveals man in three parts in the account of the rich man and Lazarus.
“ A certain rich man who wore the finest clothes and enjoyed luxurious living every day, had a certain beggar named Lazarus laid at his gate. Lazarus, being full of sores, desired to be filled with crumbs that fell from the rich mans table, and the dogs came licking his sores. It came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried, and in hell he lift up his eyes being in torments, and sees Abraham afar off with Lazarus in his bosom. The rich man cries out from hell, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water to cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. As the account unfolds we see the rich man’s desire and request for Abraham to send Lazarus back from the dead to persuade his five brothers not to come to this awful place. Abraham told the rich man, if they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. ”
The physical body is most recognizable with Lazarus body being full of sores, hungering to be filled, and the dogs licked his sores. The rich man dressed his body with the fine clothes and fed it every day and at his death, he was buried. The real man, the spirit, has a spiritual body that looks like the physical body and it has five spiritual senses allowing feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, and talking.
We see the rich man’s mind, will, and emotions being intact in hell where he recognizes Abraham and request water to cool his tongue. He has desire to warn his brothers, whom he loves, to avoid this awful place. He reasons that his brothers would take heed if someone were to return from the dead.
Properly dividing the spirit and soul is crucial for things like, being led by the Spirit, worshipping the Father, and flowing in the gifts of the Spirit. John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 1 Cor. 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Hunger And Thirst For Righteousness!
All through the scriptures we see emphasis on asking, seeking, knocking, and calling to the Lord to receive the good things God desires us to have. When we ask or call out to God we demonstrate a desire to receive that which only He can give. Jesus teaching about hungering and thirsting in the following verse portrays a strong desire to have right standing with God. Mt. 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. God is so gracious in providing redemption for fallen man. There are some who would be willing to die for a good man but God sent Jesus to suffer and die for the unkind, the unjust, the sinners. We know that this includes every single person because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Rom. 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; God’s righteousness is different than mans righteousness. Many use society’s standard of righteousness for themselves, thinking, I haven’t robbed a bank or killed any one. Their opinion of themselves is, I treat people good, I do a good job at work, I pay my taxes, etc. Their was only one who lived a perfect life without sin on this earth. His name is Jesus! James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Since God’s standard of righteousness is what He requires we do well to seek His free gift of righteousness. Righteousness can only be attained as a free gift. No man ever was or ever will be righteous in and of their own doings. Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. God made Jesus to become sin for us so we could have Jesus righteousness! 2 Cor. 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. The scripture says that God counted Abraham as righteous because he believed Him! Rom. 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Romans 4:23-25 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Jesus is our righteousness and we love Him!
Paul had a strong desire to see his own people saved but God called him to minister to the Gentiles. He writes how they have a zeal for God but not according to faith in Christ. They were endeavoring to earn righteousness through the keeping of the law. Rom. 10:3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
God is offering His righteousness on a gift basis to all who will receive His Son Jesus. Whoever will believe on Jesus and yield their life to Him will be saved. Good works are something we do after we are saved because we love Him and have taken on His nature. Recognize God’s gracious gift of, of His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, the Savior of the world! He can’t be bought and He can’t be earned, but He can be received by faith!
The glorious message of the gospel is redemption from the curse through Jesus Christ. God doing for man what was impossible for him to do on his own! Pride won’t receive this gift because pride says I can do it on my own. The humble receive grace! Receive the Lord Jesus Christ and be free from condemnation and struggle.
If you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. You can pray right now!
Father God, I believe that Jesus took my sins and was raised from the dead so I could be righteous in your sight. I confess Jesus to be my Lord and Savior and from this day forward, with your help I will live my life for you! In Jesus name! Amen
If you have prayed this prayer for the first time, please write us and let us know. It will bring great joy for us to hear that you have entered the kingdom of God and will strengthen your faith by testifying
